There is no family without a photo album. One in every two photographs is a family photo. Among these thousands of indistinguishable images, Arnold Odermatt’s photos have a unique quality: clearly structured, the images of this police officer-turned-photographer are easy to recognize by the serene expression of the people in them. The fact that Off Duty is a book about his own family does not change his photographic style. This work shows what life is like once the patrol car is parked and the uniform is put away in the closet. Pampered, his wife and children wait in the garden or living room for the photo to be taken – sometimes visibly annoyed by the length of the session. But from this process, as tiring for the family as it is for the colleagues at work, come striking documents of rural life in the Nidwalden province, the staged world of village life where a police officer, even after work, is, at best, off duty – but never truly private.
