Arnold Odermatt was born in 1925 in the canton of Nidwalden, Switzerland. He joined the police force in 1948 and retired in 1990. The small police force he was part of faced serious recruitment problems, as the young people from the villages didn’t see themselves leading a life of patrolling in uniform. Through the images published in this book, Arnold Odermatt tried to convince them otherwise. After sending his colleagues for a trip to the barber, he staged the daily adventures of their profession, the cars with flashing lights, and the power of their service weapons. In Service is a striking document of a bygone era that still feels familiar. The book contains images with distant colors that welcome us into the past, much like the smells of our childhood.
