Born in Poland in 1918 and a survivor of the Shoah, Emanuel Proweller settled in Paris in 1948. He exhibited in prestigious galleries with his abstract paintings, but his return to figuration triggered widespread incomprehension. By the late 1970s, although his work was recognized as a precursor of narrative figuration, he remained unknown to the general public. This is why the Georges-Philippe and Nathalie Vallois gallery is organizing a major exhibition. The catalog Proweller, a Memory of Sunshine, co-published with the gallery, accompanies this significant event and offers the public a fresh perspective on this painter, forgotten in art history books. His colors and forms stood in contrast to his time, yet they resonate in an extraordinary way today.
